Sugammadex (Bridion) and Birth Control

Sugammadex (Bridion) and Birth Control

Sugammadex is a medication you were given to help speed up your recovery. During your procedure you received medicine that allowed your muscles to relax. Sugammadex helps restore your muscle function that was blocked during surgery.

Sugammadex can make hormonal birth control methods less effective. These include:

  • Birth control pills
  • Shots such as Depo-Provera
  • Implants such as Nexplanon
  • Vaginal rings such as NuvaRing
  • Contraceptive patches

For the next 7 days, use an extra non-hormonal (barrier method) form of birth control to help prevent pregnancy. Continue to use your current birth control and add one of these backup methods:

  • Condoms
  • Diaphragm with spermicide
  • Abstinence (not having sex)

IUDs (Intrauterine devices) are not affected by Sugammadex. If you have an IUD, back-up birth control is not needed.
