Your Health Care Team (The James)

 

Many people work together to provide your care. Here is a description of the different members of your health care team. Use this handout to write down their names and phone numbers.  

The James Cancer Hospital is a teaching hospital. Your health care team may include staff that is in training. Staff may rotate when there is a “change in service” which means you may have another doctor who will provide your care when this change happens.

Attending PhysicianA doctor who directs your treatment and coordinates your care with other doctors and team members 
FellowA doctor who is training to become a specialist. 
Resident or InternA doctor who is taking more medical training 
Medical StudentA person still in medical school who is supervised by a doctor. 
Nurse Practitioner (NP)A nurse with advanced training who may do procedures and prescribe medicine. 

Nurses (RN or LPN)

A nurse plans and directs your nursing care. Nurses provide care and teach you how to care for yourself. 
Patient Care Resource Manager (PCRM)A case manager who helps coordinate your care when you leave the hospital. 

Patient Care Associate (PCA) or Student Nurse Associate (SNA)

A PCA or SNA help the nurse take care of you. 
Physician Assistant (PA)A PA is a special assistant with advanced training who may do procedures and prescribe medicine. 
Registered Dietitian and Dietetic TechnicianA dietitian and diet tech helps with nutrition, learning and food choices. 
Chaplain/ClergyA chaplain or clergy is available 24 hours, 7 days a week, to offer spiritual care, emotional support, prayer and other religious rituals. 
Consulting Physician or SpecialistA doctor who is a specialist and consulted for advice on your treatment. 
Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)A nurse with advanced training who helps with patient care and nursing practice. 
Clinical Study or Nurse CoordinatorHelps to coordinate your care or monitor research studies. 
Enterostomal TherapistA nurse with special training in wound and ostomy care 
Nurse ManagerA nurse that manages the nursing staff and care provided on the unit. 
Palliative Care TeamWorks with your doctor to help manage your pain and symptoms 
Patient RepresentativeThe Patient Experience Department can help you with any concerns or questions you may have during your visit. 
Pharmacist or Pharmacy TechPrepares medicines for you. 

Physical, Speech or Occupational Therapist

Therapists help you with walking, self-care and speech problems to improve your independence after an injury or illness. 

Respiratory Therapist

This therapist helps patients with breathing problems and takes care of oxygen equipment. 
Social WorkerThe social worker can help you and your family with concerns such as your care after your hospital stay, coping or finding resources to meet your needs. 
Student InternsStudents from studying in different areas may help care for you and are supervised by the health care team. 

Transport Staff

This staff will take you to test and procedure areas when you are in the hospital. 
Unit Clerical Associate (UCA)This secretary handles calls and requests for the nursing unit. This person answers when you use your call light.
