Your Acute Leukemia Health Care Team (The James)
Many people work together to provide your care. Here is a description of the different members of your health care team. Use this handout to write down their names and phone numbers.
The James Cancer Hospital is a teaching hospital. Your health care team may include staff that is in training. Staff may rotate when there is a “change in service” which means you may have another doctor who will provide your care when this change happens.
Health Care Team Members | What They Do | Names and Numbers |
Attending Physician | A doctor who directs your treatment and coordinates your care with other doctors and team members | |
Fellow | A doctor who is training to become a specialist. | |
Resident or Intern | A doctor who is in medical training | |
Medical Student | A person still in medical school who is supervised by a doctor. | |
Nurse Practitioner (NP)/Physician Assistant (PA) | A healthcare provider with advanced training who may do procedures and prescribe medicine. | |
Nurses (RN or LPN) Wears navy blue or white scrubs | A nurse plans and directs your nursing care. Nurses provide care and teach you how to care for yourself. | |
Patient Care Resource Manager (PCRM) | A case manager who helps coordinate your care when you leave the hospital. | |
Patient Care Associate (PCA) or Student Nurse Associate (SNA) Wears emerald green scrubs | A PCA or SNA help the nurse take care of you. | |
Registered Dietitian (RD) and Dietetic Technician | A dietitian and diet tech helps with your nutrition, and food choices. | |
Chaplain/Clergy | A chaplain or clergy is available 24 hours, 7 days a week, to offer spiritual care, emotional support, prayer and other religious rituals. | |
Consulting Physician or Specialist | A doctor who is a specialist and provides advice on your treatment. | |
Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) | A nurse with advanced training who may help with your care. | |
Clinical Study or Nurse Coordinator | Helps to coordinate your care or monitor research studies. | |
Enterostomal Therapist | A nurse with special training in wound and ostomy care | |
Nurse Manager | A nurse that manages the nursing staff and care provided to you. | |
Palliative Care Team | Works with your doctor to help manage your pain and symptoms | |
Patient Representative | The Patient Experience Department can help you with any concerns or questions you may have during your visit. | |
Pharmacist or Pharmacy Tech | Prepares and provides education on medicines for you. | |
Physical, Speech or Occupational Therapist Wears grey scrubs | Therapists help you with walking, self-care and speech problems. | |
Respiratory Therapist Wears royal blue scrubs | Therapist that may help you with breathing problems and takes care of oxygen equipment. | |
Social Worker | The social worker can help you and your family with concerns such as your care after your hospital stay, coping or finding resources to meet your needs. | |
Student Interns | Health care students may help care for you and are supervised by your health care team. | |
Transport Staff Wears khaki scrubs | Staff that takes you to test and procedure areas when you are in the hospital. | |
Unit Clerical Associate (UCA) | Staff that answers calls and requests for the nursing unit. This person answers when you use your call light. | |
Environmental Services Wears gray tops | Staff that clean your room each day during your hospital stay. |
