Liver with Elastography Ultrasound

Liver with Elastography Ultrasound

Your doctor has ordered this test to check the health of your liver. This test uses sound waves to get pictures of the liver and to assess if there is scar tissue from liver damage, called cirrhosis.

To prepare for the test

  • This test requires that you fast, having nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to exam time.  You are allowed to have a few sips of water to take medicine if needed. If this prep is not followed, your exam will have to be rescheduled as it can greatly affect the results of your test.
  • To be more comfortable for the test, it is better to schedule this exam first thing in the morning.

Day of the test

  • Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time unless you have been asked to arrive earlier.
  • When you arrive, you will be asked to fill out a form for your insurance and billing information.  Remember to bring a picture ID and your insurance card(s) with you.

During the test

  • The test will take about 30 minutes.
  • The ultrasound technologist will ask you to pull your shirt up to chest level and tuck towels into your clothing.
  • Warm gel will be placed on your skin and the ultrasound transducer will be used to take pictures. It is a type of hand held wand that the technologist will slowly roll across the area.

After the test

  • Your ultrasound will be read by a radiologist, a doctor that specializes in radiology, and the results will be sent to your doctor.
