Renal Ultrasound

Renal Ultrasound

Your doctor has ordered this test to assess the health of your kidneys. Renal means involving the kidneys or the area of your kidneys. This test uses sound waves to get pictures of the kidneys and your bladder.

To prepare for the test

  • There is no preparation for this test unless your doctor has asked for a test of your bladder when it is full and empty. If your doctor has asked for this type of test, drink 32 ounces of water 1 to 2 hours before the test and then DO NOT go to the bathroom. The water in your bladder is important to be able to get a good measurement.

Day of the test

  • Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time unless you have been asked to arrive earlier.
  • When you arrive, you will be asked to fill out a form for your insurance and billing information.  Remember to bring a picture ID and your insurance card(s) with you.

During the test

  • The test will take about 30 minutes.
  • The technologist will ask you to pull your shirt up to chest level and tuck towels into your clothing.
  • Warm gel will be placed on your skin and the ultrasound transducer will be used to take pictures. It is a type of hand held wand that the technologist will slowly roll across the area.

After your test

  • Your ultrasound will be read by a radiologist, a doctor that specializes in radiology, and the results will be sent to your doctor.
