Your Thoracic Medical Oncology Team (The James)

 

James Cancer Hospital

Many people work together to provide your care. Here is a description of the different members of your health care team. The James Cancer Hospital is a teaching hospital. Your health care team may also include members that are in training. If you have questions, call the Thoracic Medical Oncology Team at (614) 293-6786.

Health Care Team MembersWhat They Do    Name    
Attending PhysicianA doctor who directs your treatment and coordinates your care with other doctors and team members. If you are in the hospital, you may have a different attending physician. 
FellowA doctor who is training to become a specialist.

 

Resident or InternA doctor who is taking more medical training. 
Medical StudentA student in medical school who is supervised by a doctor

 

Nurse Practitioner (NP)A nurse with advanced training who may do procedures and order medicine. 
Physician Assistant (PA)A special assistant to the doctor with advanced training who may do procedures and order medicine. 
Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)A nurse with advanced training who helps with your care and nursing practice. 
Primary Nurse (RN)A nurse who plans and directs your nursing care. 
Clinical Study or Nurse Coordinator)A team member who helps coordinate care or monitor research studies. 
Nurse ManagerA nurse who manages the nursing staff and the care provided to you in the clinic.

 

Pharmacist or Pharmacy TechnicianA team member who prepares and provides education on medicine for you. 
Registered DietitianA team member who provides education about nutrition and food choices. 

Physical Therapist

Occupational Therapist

Speech Language Pathologist

Team members who help with walking, self-care and speech/ swallowing problems that may result from an injury or illness. 
Respiratory TherapistA team member who helps with breathing problems and takes care of oxygen equipment. 
Social WorkerA team member who helps you and your family find resources to meet your needs.

 

Patient Care Associate (PCA)A team member who helps your nurse provide care. 
SchedulerA team member who sets up your clinic visit appointments.

 

Patient RepresentativeA team member who helps with non-medical concerns or questions you may have during your visit. 
Student InternsStudents studying in other areas may help with your care. They are supervised by your health care team. 

Your doctor may also have someone from one of the following departments meet with you about your care:

  • Palliative Care
  • Pastoral Care
  • Patient Care Resource Management
